iPhone 3GS on Consumer Cellular with Edge data working!

[contentblock id=2]

Read this first: This post is somewhat dated so I’ve written a follow-up post that could save you a lot of time if you just want a quick way to set up your iPhone or iPad on Consumer Cellular.

As you read on, you’ll see that this was a discovery process for me. I took several steps that weren’t really necessary. So try this first…

  1. Make sure your iPhone is jailbroken. Read up at the iPhone Dev Team blog for more info on jailbreaking.
  2. Update your AT&T carrier bundle to allow APN editing. You will need an SFTP application such as Cyberduck (mac) or Filezilla (PC) to connect in and see the files on your iPhone. Connect to root@youriPhoneIPaddress using the user name root and the password alpine (unless you’ve already changed the root password – which you should do if you haven’t already). Inside the AT&T carrier bundle, there is a file named carrier.plist. It is located here… /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/ATT_US.bundle/carrier.plist. It contains a property named “AllowEDGEEditing” which is a bool (true/false) property. If that property is not in the file, you can manually add it using the Apple plist editor (part of the Apple developer tools – a free download). I’m sure there are free plist editors for the PC as well. Note that this file must be saved in the same format that you found it (binary). Don’t try to save it as a plain text XML file. It won’t work. If you are using an editor other than the Apple plist editor you’ll need to make sure it supports binary when saving. After editing this file, go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network and enter the consumer cellular APN, MMSC, MMS Proxy and MMS UA Prof URL.

That’s it. If that doesn’t work for you, read on…

Here is what your carrier.plist might look like…

Discovery Process (don’t do this stuff unless you know what you are doing):
Finally after almost 2 years with an iPhone on Consumer Cellular I figured out how to get their data plan working!  It took a great deal of hacking at carrier bundles.  By default Consumer Cellular uses the AT&T bundle but for some reason it does not use the AT&T carrier name on screen.  I haven’t figured that one out yet.  At any rate, this is pretty kickin’ because Consumer Cellular is cheap and you don’t have to unlock your phone for them to work!  On the flip side you do have to jailbreak to do this hack.

I’m uploading my AT&T bundle so that you don’t have to go through all the work but you might have to anyway since there are signatures in the carrier.plist file.  I’m not sure if those are tied to the phone or not.  Here are the files…

Consumer Cellular Custom .ipcc (I really don’t think you need this)
Consumer Cellular Custom AT&T bundle
ATT_US.bundle (4.3.1)

There’s definitely an easier way but this worked for me…

Custom Consumer Cellular carrier bundle (I don’t think you need to do this part)…

  1. Used the carrier bundle generator website to create a bundle using the listed Consumer Cellular APN and MMS settings**.
  2. Installed carrier bundle via iTunes as recommended by the carrier bundle generator website.
  3. Using SFTP, copied everything in /var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles/ (including ConsumerCellular_custom.bundle) to my desktop.  This serves as a backup in case something goes wrong.
  4. Deleted everything in /var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles/
  5. Copied ConsumerCellular_custom.bundle to /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/

Custom AT&T carrier bundle…

  1. Using SFTP, copied /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/ATT_US.bundle to my desktop.
  2. Opened carrier.plist from inside the AT&T bundle on my desktop with the Apple plist editor and added settings that were in the Consumer Cellular bundle but not in this one.  I also updated the name of the provider and MMS proxy URL.  Download the custom AT&T bundle and compare it to yours to see what all I changed.
  3. Copied ATT_US.bundle from my desktop back to /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/.
  4. Restarted the phone.

Note that you can use SBSettings to check if you have a “Data IP Address” on the Edge network.  If this is helpful leave me a comment and let me know of your success!

UPDATE:

  • It appears that after running this for 2 days, Consumer Cellular is not tracking my data usage.  Perhaps the hacked carrier bundle is causing the iPhone to bypass their servers and go straight to AT&T? Or perhaps they are tracking it but it’s not being reflected on their website since they still think I’m using an old Nokia phone and the data option is grayed out?  It took a while to show up but they are tracking it.
  • I noticed that in order to get data working I must disable WIFI, data and the phone components.  Then enable phone, then edge.  Sometimes it takes a few minutes to turn on.
  • I later enabled this on my old 3G running iOS 3.1.3.  All I had to do was add the “AllowEDGEEditing” bool property to the beginning of the carrier.plist file inside the AT&T bundle.  Then I went to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network and entered the consumer cellular APN, MMSC, MMS Proxy and MMS UA Prof URL.
  • Since I originally updated my carrier bundle, the plain text APN settings that I added have been converted to “data” entries encoded using a signature (most likely specific to my phone). You’ll see this in the plist if you download the second file listed above. I’m not sure how to generate these signatures but I suppose you could just remove them from the file and then manually add the APN settings again. Perhaps new signatures will be generated for your iPhone after doing so?

If this saves you money, please consider donating. This will allow us to continue to provide quality content.

  1. Heck yeah! Thank you so much, this also worked on my Samsung Eternity, all I had to do was put that proxy address into the Access Name field. Very quick fix to what could have become a lengthy ordeal.

  2. Glad it helped! Yah, if you can edit the APN settings on the phone already (unlocked) you are golden!

  3. Just so I’m clear on your updates, they *are* tracking data usage? ie – it is coming out of your 2mb allotment? Feel free to email a response, and thanks for the hard work!

  4. Thanks for posting the info. Is there a dumbed-down version of this anywhere for those of us who have never hacked a phone before?

  5. Yes, it is tracking data properly. It just took a few days to catch up. It does show up on the Consumer Cellular website now too.

As to the dumbed down version, If I can break away from everything else I’ll post something. Did you have specific questions about the process?

  6. Seems to work perfectly for Nokia E63. Just copied the ‘ATT MMS’ access point and then edited them with new names using the above settings.
FYI: I spent nearly an hr with CC customer support in Oct. trying to get their help. Glad they finally heard the message.

  7. Cool! I’m glad it worked for you! The info is posted right on their website now so they definitely recognized the need. For what it’s worth, we’ve been with CC for quite a while now and their support has always been really good other than the fact that they told me it wouldn’t work with the iPhone. That’s to be expected though because you do have to jailbreak to get it working.

  8. Mark, I’m into following your example but really don’t know much about iPhones / what I’m getting into. Amazingly, I have a friend who gave me their old iPhone so I’m looking to do this from the ground up. I was hoping to use it with Consumer Cellular but was told it would not work so I was happy to see through a google search that you’d already accomplished the desired goal. I understand I need to jailbreak the phone and then go through some other steps. Would you be able to lay out the whole process with recommended links to each piece? I’m a little uneasy about bricking the phone as I really don’t know much about this yet. I’m a quick study (IT guy) so hopefully your are willing to assist. Thanks in advance!

  9. I’ve added an intro section to this post that should help you guys get this working quickly. Feel free to ask any additional questions you have.

  10. I’m not a programmer and am getting errors when trying to save the edited file. On what line of the Carrier.plist file would I add “AllowEDGEEditing” and are there things to add like or ? Thanks.

  11. In my plist file it was the first “key” in the first “dict” tag.
    <?xml …>
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>AllowEDGEEditing</key>
    <true/>

  12. Thank you for the writeup! Have you tried this on an iphone with the 4.x.x iOS? I tried on mine with 4.2.1, jailbroken, iPhone 3G and it was unsuccessful. By doing a Google search I found with version 4.x.x, apple implemented a key system that will recognize and undo any changes made to the carrier.plist file. I will keep working on it and see if I can find anything that works and report back if I do. You have been a great help in the right direction!

  13. Yah, for sure let me know if you get it working. I haven’t messed with iOS 4.x on the 3G. It’s just way too slow for my taste. But it is working on my 3Gs with iOS 4.1.

  14. Thanks for the write up. I see that you are becoming the goto person for Consumer Cellular customers who what to use other phones on the CC network. I have a LG VU Plus AT&T phone that I am trying to get data on through CC. I believe it is set up to receive data through GPRS, do I need to switch it to to receive EDGE data as you did with your iphone?

  15. I have completed the steps and loaded on the Custom Consumer Cellular carrier bundle. Now I am ready to edit the AT&T carrier bundle as you say. However, when I downloaded and opened your AT&T bundle to use as example to check against mine to know what to edit, it seems to be the same as the custom Consumer Cellular carrier bundle. Is it possible that you accidentally put the custom Consumer Cellular carrier bundle up for both of the files linked to above? Or should I be editing the AT&T carrier bundle to look exactly like the custom CC bundle? Your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  16. Anything is possible my friend. 🙂 I just updated the link using the latest copy from my phone but I have verified that signatures have been added to the file since I made my changes which means it might not take new changes and it most likely will not work on another phone. But let me know if you have success with it! The first time I updated it, I manually entered the APN information over the top of an existing APN section. Document hierarchy is as follows…

    root
    …. apns
    …… item x
    ……… apn
    ……… password
    ……… type-mask
    ……… username

  17. Alan, I didn’t have to make a change in the file with regard to which network to use. As far as I know, the iPhone only supports 3G and EDGE, so I’m not sure where GPRS comes in. But if you can switch to EDGE, you are more likely to have success since I’ve tested that it’s working.

  18. Thanks for your help Mark. So was able to disable the signature check that prevents editing of the carrier.plist file on iphone OS version 4.x.x and higher by installing the patch and following the directions available here: http://xsellize.com/topic/95289-commcenter-patch-by-wortel-4all4-update/

I am now able to edit the plist file and added the AllowEDGEEditing lines. The options now appear to manually edit the APN settings on the iphone under the Cellular Data Network settings. I have done that but am still unable to connect the edge network. It tries occasionally but I will get a message saying “unable to activate cellular data network”.

With all the settings correct, that leads me to believe that consumer cellular is blocking access. Looking on their website, I am unable to enable data service for my phone (check box is grayed out because CC thinks I am using an older, non-web enabled phone.) I asked if they could enable it on their end and she told me lies about how that is impossible and the iphone won’t work and neither will any of my apps if I try (!!! hahaha yea right). I tried to explain that my phone settings are all correct, and other people have done it. Hopeless.

Anyway Mark, my question is, in your account page (change services page) on the CC website, is the check box next to the phone number associated with your iphone checked? Or is it grayed out like mine is? I am thinking that if I got CC to think my phone was a web-ready model, I could check the box and get my iphone to authenticate with the data network. Thanks again for your continued help.

  19. Nice work mate! That’s awesome that you can bypass the signatures!

On the data provisioning, yes, they do have to turn it on at their end. The checkbox is still grayed out for me because they never updated my phone on their end but data is active. You probably just need to call back and talk to someone who knows what they are talking about. I had them turn it on for both my phone and my wife’s phone. I think the trick is to never mention the word “iPhone” since I had tried this route before and they were unable to help me. I wonder if they have specific instructions from AT&T since they are using their network?

Anyway, here was our correspondence from 12/22/2010 to 1/2/2010…

    ME:
I have a phone that supports data but has not officially been provisioned by Consumer Cellular. It is unlocked so I have access to change the APN and other necessary settings. We are paying for the “connect” plan but when I log in to my account, I cannot enable data because it’s grayed out. I’m guessing this is due to the fact that you guys have a different phone on my records. Would it be possible for you to enable data without me ordering a new phone? I can deal with setting up my phone. I just need you to turn it on on your end. Thanks.

    CC:
Thank you for your email. We cannot guarantee that a phone from another provider will work with our service. AT&T unlocked phones that are less than two years old will usually work; however, only for voice calls and possibly text messages. Be advised that picture messaging, internet use, GPS, etc. will not function properly if at all. Smart phones (iPhone, Blackberry’s, etc) will NOT work with our service at all. Your phone must have a place for a SIM card to be inserted and phones from providers other than AT&T most likely will not read our SIM cards. We will happily send you a SIM card assigned to the service you start so that you may try your existing GSM phone. There is no way to tell for sure if an existing phone will work otherwise. If it does not function properly then one of our phones will need to be purchased instead (starting at $35.00).

    ME:
It is an AT&T phone. We don’t use MMS at all so that’s not an issue. It would be great if you guys could send a sim card to test. If it works, both my wife and I will most likely bump up to the next level of data access.

    CC:
Hello Mark, Thank you for your email. The web data feature will not work on a AT&T phone at all.

    ME:
I have more than one phone that I’d like to test it on. Can you send out the sim card anyway?

    CC:
Hello Mark, Thank you for your email. If you want to see if the feature works in one of your phones you can try one of the SIM cards that you have already.

    ME:
Yes, except that our old Consumer Cellular phones didn’t support data so I need it enabled on your end. This is clear when I log in to my account to find that the data option is grayed out for each of our phones. I don’t want to pay a $35 activation fee just to see if it will work.

My old sim card is already in the phone. Everything works except data so I want to find out if data will work as well. Again, it’s unlocked and I have access to the change the APN and other settings. So, is it possible for you to send out a sim card that allows data?

    CC:
Thank you for your email. I have provisioned the web data services to your the SIM for phone number 602-XXX-XXXX. If you put your SIM card in the flashed phone, you can see if the web data will work on that phone.

    ME:
Everything seems to be working except MMS which I’m still testing a bit. Could I get you to provision my wife’s sim card as well? Her number is 602-XXX-XXXX. You guys can certainly bill me for the provisioning time. (which they never did)

    CC:
Thank you for your email. I have provisioned the web data services to your the SIM for phone number 602-XXX-XXXX. If you put your SIM card in the flashed phone, you can see if the web data will work on that phone. (Heh heh, canned response. It’s the same as earlier.)

Then I gave them a nice thank you and some praise for being excellent.

  20. Thanks Mark! I have emailed them and hopefully they will enable data for me. I will come back and let you know if I have success! Thanks again for all your help!

  21. Success! Edge data and MMS now working on my iPhone 3G 4.2.1 with Consumer Cellular! It took only 2 hours for CC customer support to respond to my email and provision the data service for my phone number. Much more effective than calling their phone support.

Now the fun part will be limiting my data usage to the 15MB that comes with my Connect plan. I am planning on leaving Edge disabled normally and use wifi as I have been unless I am away from a hotspot and need internet. I am using the data toggle button in SBSettings to quickly do that. To watch my usage, I also installed the Data Usage toggle button for SBSettings (iOS 4.0+ only) that provides a quick glance at total data usage. (Available through Cydia, search Data Usage, bigboss repo). There is also a paid app ($2.99) called Data Counter available through Cydia that I am demoing for now. But it appears the Data Usage toggle will suffice for my needs.

So to recap for other iPhone users with iOS 4.x.x:

    1) iOS versions 4.x.x implemented a signature system that prevents accepting changes to the carrier.plist file. To get around this, install the CommCenter patch available on this site and follow the directions in the PDF included in the zip file: http://xsellize.com/topic/95289-commcenter-patch-by-wortel-4all4-update/

    2) Edit the AT&T carrier.plist file to include the “AllowEDGEEditing” property as Mark details above. Add the APN and MMS settings to your iphone.

    3) Enable the data web option on your CC account through their website if possible. If not (grayed out) EMAIL (phone support does not seem to work) Consumer cellular and ask them to provision data web services for your phone number.

That’s what worked for me!! Many thanks to Mark for his site and continued help thought this process. I have waited many years for this!!!

  22. That’s great that you got it working! Thanks for the recap. Would you mind posting your final ATT_US.bundle file for the sake of others interested in doing this?

  23. Sure! Here it is below.

I forgot to mention I did add “AllowMMSCEditing” and “AllowMMSEditing” in addition to “AllowEDGEEditing” as suggested in in the PDF instructions included with the CommCenter patch, but I am not sure if they are necessary. Those are the only changes I made to the file, I added the Consumer Cellular settings through the settings page on the iPhone.

I also should mention for Windows users, I used “plist Editor for Windows” (freeware) to edit the plist file, available from: http://www.icopybot.com/download.htm and it worked great.

  24. Hi Mark:
The bit about getting CC to provision your account for data is important. I have not gotten data to work on my LG Vu Plus after fooling around with the settings for about 10 days, but I just sent an e-mail to CC asking that my number be provisioned for data. I will wait for a reply, then hopefully have better luck getting data and MMS to work. Thanks.

  25. Hi Mark:

Consumer Cellular was nice and quick regarding getting my phone provisioned for data.

When I try to connect to the web, however, I now get this error message: “at&t is experiencing technical difficulties. please try again later. error code 3008”. Anyone have any idea what I need to do at this point to get the data working?

Am I now going to have to update the carrier bundle to allow data editing as you did? How do I get my phone’s IP address?

  26. There are a lot of people complaining about “medianet” with that error. They said it was an outage which really just means that the phone isn’t getting the expected response from the server. I’d suggest you verify that 3G is disabled and that 2G/Edge is enabled. If you’ve entered all the APN settings correctly that should do the trick.

I looked up your phone on GSMArena.com and compared it to the iPhone. It looks like you should have the exact same bands as the iPhone for the 2G network; GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900.

If you can’t get it to work by disabling 3G, you may have to do a bit more research your phone.

  27. Hi Mark, Only on the GSM 850 do I get a signal, but still the same eror message. The MMS is now working (it was not before the CC provisioning), so maybe I need to spend some time re-checking and adjusting the data settings.

  28. HI Mark:
The data is now working. I got it working almost by accident. Yesterday I got a (JUNK) message that had a web address in it. When I “clicked” on the address, I was on the web! It turns out the problem was the AT&T browser, not my settings. I have down loaded a different browser (Opera Mini), and I am in business.
BTW, yesterday, CC sent me a message that let me know what I was trying to do was not going to work.
So, I will not need to “hack” the phone unless maybe I want to get rid of some of the AT&T stuff that is not working or necessary
So, for any CC customers who are trying to get data and MMS on a non-CC phone, here are two lessons I learned:

    1) You will need to get CC to provision your phone for data. That means when you look at your phone information on the CC website, both the text and the data boxes are “checked” (not “grayed”). Call or e-mail CC. I did both, but calling worked best for me. Since my old CC phone could not receive data, the rep changed CC’s info to show that I had a CC phone that did receive data.

    2) If your MMS is working, but you cannot connect on you phone’s browser, it may be the browser. Send yourself a MMS with a web address and try to click on it.

Thanks for your help Mark and also thanks to those made comments here.

Now, I can get on with the rest of my life!

  29. I agree with everything you said except that the web page needs to show the data checkbox as checked. Mine doesn’t. All that really matters here is that they have provisioned your sim card for data.

Your browser probably had a proxy server set up which is inaccessible on the CC network. 🙂 Nice that you could download a new browser.

  30. I’d really like to have an iPhone that continues to work as a phone and will allow Internet access under a Consumer Cellular plan. I’m already a Consumer Cellular customer and really like them a lot. But, I’m intimidated by all the steps it appears you have to go through just to get it working. Is there somewhere you can send your phone and have someone set it up for you? Or buy a used one that’s already been configured? Thanks.

  31. Not that I know of. I think the bigger issue is this… if you are uncomfortable with all the steps, what will you do when it’s time upgrade to a newer version of iOS? There have been times in the past where upgrades were released within 6 months.

My recommendation would be that if you are uncomfortable with all of this, find a techie college kid and pay them a few bucks to do it. There are also a plethora of iPhone jailbreaking places that could probably help you out but may be a bit more expensive.

  32. Hi Mark,

Thanks for the help so far, and to those who have filled in the gaps that iOS 4.x.x leaves. I’m a little confused as to what exactly I’m looking for when I edit the plist file for the carrier. I’m able to open the WinSCP file and see a bunch of junk characters that look nothing like the simple stuff you show above where you check this and unckeck that… I’m stuck using a PC for all of this, so what should I be looking for exactly when I’m modifying the carrier list.. I downloaded the free plist editor that was recommended above, but it’s like a “notebook” application where you need to put something in and it’s supposed to do something like convert the file???? I’m a little lost with what program to do what with and what I’m supposed to be looking for. Is there anyone with a PC that can help me out? I’m using a 3gs with 4.1 Jailbroken and unlocked. Have the CC sim card in with a data plan with them. (I did NOT tell them I had an iPhone.) Also does the APN website where it changes the carrier to Consumer Cellular really do anything for this change, or is what we’re doing going beyond what that does? I spent a good portion of the day looking at the PDF file with the .deb file and scratching my head as to what to do where and in what sequence. There is some stuff there that doesn’t make sense on that tutorial as well. I know how to J/b, unlock and pull iPhones apart, but the code stuff is beyond what I know. I just need a good youtube video that explains what I’m supposed to do and I’ll be golden! Thanks y’all!
    Nathan

  33. The junk characters are because the file is saved in a binary format. You need an editor that supports binary, like the Apple plist editor. I’m not sure about a PC option for that.

The easiest way I’ve found to install the Comm Center patch is to copy it into a folder on the iPhone and use iFile to install it. If you need to uninstall it later, you can do that through Cydia.

Oh and one more very good thing to report! Since I updated my plist on iOS 4.3.1, 3G started working and I don’t have to toggle airplane mode to turn data on and off. Yay!

  34. Hi Mark,

So I recently upgraded my 3gs’s iOS to 4.3.3 and it’s j/b and unlocked. I JUST realized that the commcenter patch says it is only good up to 4.2.1????? I really hope I don’t have to go back and j/b it again with the older version! You mentioned you were on 4.3.1, so maybe it still works with the 3g network to boot?

Okay, so I’ve been studying this tutorial along with the PDF file that comes with the CommCenter patch. I figured out the plist editor using the XML part of it and going through each line to make the necessary changes. I thought I had copied all of the critical lines of your template AT&T bundle sample file and saved and moved it in to my phone via SSH. I rebooted and no luck. Then, I copied your file verbatim and only kept my signature at the bottom and uploaded that. Still no workie. I did notice that some of the lines in the code of your sample template still have the cingular or at&t stuff still in there. Not sure if that matters.

Would it be possible for you to upload the *latest* version of what your carrier plist file to the blog so we can all see what it looks like?

Have you seen the APN changer site: unlockit.co.nz ? If you browse there via Safari on your iPhone you can set up your phone to change the APN. I tried this before I upgraded/changed my phone/iOS and it didn’t seem to work.

I’ll continue to fiddle with the “code” of allowedgeediting and such, but this is the most I’ve ever dived into this type of stuff. At least I saved a backup of my AT&T bundle folder so I don’t do anything too permanent. Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Nathan

  35. It sounds like the iPhone is not taking your changes because your CommCenter patch isn’t functioning properly. Try the patch on this repo…
    http://cydia.iphonemod.com.br/

Let us know if it works for you. It says it is for 4.2.1 but I’m pretty sure that’s the one I used for 4.3.1. I can’t remember for sure now. It’s been a very busy couple of weeks with life changes going on for me.

Here’s the latest version of my carrier bundle…
    http://markandkelley.com/mark/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/ATT_US.bundle1.zip

I have seen unlockit.co.nz. I’m the one who got them to add Consumer Cellular to the list (which does work). Unfortunately it cannot change settings for SMS or anything else. It can only change the APN.

  36. Okay, update!

Still no data coming through as of yet. I did get the “Cellular Data Network” tab to come up in my “Network” folder so that I can see that att.mvno is my APN, but still nothing working. I got the 4.3.3 patch that you linked to above installed and it shows up in Cydia in the packages. I copied the stuff at the top of your plist and put it in my plist folder to upload into the phone and it looks like it’s all there and complete as far as getting the “AllowEdgeediting” and stuff…. I’ve switched the settings around from enabling/disabling 3g and going in to Airplane mode with no success yet. I know I’ve got to be close!

Hope the life changes smooth out for you! I’m in the same boat with a new employer to please…. (partly why I’m doing the Consumer Cellular plan w/ data – employer want me to have data)

Any help you can provide is much appreciated! Thanks Mark!

    Nathan

  37. Just realized that CC hasn’t allowed the data part of my account yet. I told them on the phone when I ordered the sim card to enable this and that I’d pay for the $20 plan. I need to email them. This has probably been the problem the whole time! Agh! We’ll cross our fingers and hope it’s just their end. For now we’ll wait and see.

    Nathan

  38. Yep. That sounds right. I’m glad you got the settings to take though. Let us know if you get it working!

  39. Success! 3g works on 4.3.3. I tried to send an photo through the text part, but it didn’t go through. I’ll have to investigate that in the plist editor. At least I have email/internet access though when I’m on the go. Thanks for the help and I’ll post an update when I figure out the MMS.

    Nathan

  40. It took me a bit but I just got connected to the Edge network with Consumer Cellular and an iphone 3GS running 4.3.3 and baseband 5.16.2. Followed the directions at the top with a few exceptions and it worked great. It appears the .plist settings live in mobile/Carrier Bundle.bundle/carrier.plist Otheriwse everything else was the same. Very cool stuff! Thanks Mark for figuring this out.

  41. Excellent! Thanks for the update Nathan! Yah, a few things have changed since I originally got this working, including the location of the Carrier Bundles. Mine now exist in /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone/.

  42. Hi Mark,

Do you know what your settings look like for MMS in the settings part of your iPhone? I tried different varriations of what CC uses, but maybe I got it wrong? Pretty sure my plist is exactly what you have in your latest update. Not a biggie since I haven’t sent photo’s in the past, but I figure I may as well try to have it functioning as fully as possible. Thanks again for all the help. Seems a little overwhelming at first, but it was kinda fun tinkering with the programing. You can’t beat CC’s pricing for cell service AND data!

    Nathan

  43. Consumer Cellular is legally contracted with AT&T to lease their ‘lines’. There is also an exclusion clause which prevents them from legally allowing iPhones on their system, thus they provide no customer service for iPhones.

At&T, near as I can tell, has a legal monopoly on GSM iPhone service with regard to data service in the U.S.

Who said monopolies are against the law?

  44. Ok. Messed about with the Consumer Cellular settings and using wap.cingular as the APN did not work.

    att.mvno did work.

  45. Hi guys. Thanks for creating this page and thanks for all your help.

I have tried to make this work on a 3G iphone and was unsuccessful. I originally had IOS 4.1 pwned with pwnage tool. I installed the CC (CommCenter) patch from the command-line (‘dpkg -i CC……deb’ by having logged in as root via SSH). The file I used was for 4.2.1 in the following link:
    http://cydia.iphonemod.com.br/
I proceeded to drop in the ATT_Bundle that was published here. This process did not work. So I dowjnloaded IOS 4.2.1 and pwnage tool 4.2 and “restored” the iphone with the pwned IOS 4.2.1 in order to match the CC patch version numbers. This has not worked. The only step I did not perform is to contact CC to enable the data on the Connect plan — I will do that tomorrow.

My question is: is that last step necessary in order to get (phone) service working? Ultimately I will have the data enabled, but it seems to me that one should not need it enabled in order for the phone aspect of the service to work. I could be wrong, of course. If anyone knows the answer, or what I am doing wrong, please share your thoughts. Many thanks.
    Iznogoud

  46. No. Phone and SMS will work without contacting consumer cellular. Keep in mind that the schema of the carrier bundle XML file has changed with newer versions of iOS. I’m guessing that’s where your problem lies. It would be best to restore which ever version of iOS you prefer and then modify your own carrier bundle rather than using mine. Yours will most likely be different than mine anyway. FYI – this is working on my old 3G.

Good luck! Let us know if you have any success.

  47. Thanks for the response. I figured that what you said is the case. So I am back to having to modify the “carrier.plist” I suppose.

I hope this is not a stupid question, but where do I find the information that I have to put in the carrier.plist file in order to make it work? I looked here: unlockit.co.nz

Also a couple more things. My “Network” under Settings->General does not show the tap that allows me to change the APN from the phone after having applied the patch on the IOS 4.2.1. Could that be my problem? The other is just an observation. In Mark’s bundle’s carrier.plist the “AlllowEDGEEditing” is an array with a single boolean element set to YES. I have tried with making a simple boolean (not a part of an array) and it made no difference.
    Thanks,
    Iznogoud

  48. I figured it out. My iPhone 3G had a “modem firmware” (or basenode) that was not easily hackable. And so the CommCenter patch would not work at all. The UltraSn0w hack would not work either, but that got me the closest. Upon more web-reading I figured that I needed to change that modem firmware. I used Redsnow and downloaded the IOS 4.2.1 image. I used Redsnow 0.96b5, which is the one that allows witching of the modem firmware to the iPad’s firmware, which is 6.15.00. The process went smoothly and now my iPhone 3G has IOS 4.2.1 and modem firmware 6.15.00 and is jailbroken, and is unlocked, and I have made phonecalls with my ConsumerCellular SIM, and received SMS texts. IT now remains to get CC to “un-gray” the data button and I should be able to get data.

I hope this information helps anybody else who finds this (very useful) page and is experiencing the same problems as I did.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed here.

  49. Does your GPS still work after the baseband update? I know some people had problems with that.

  50. Does anyone know if this will work with a jailbroken iphone 4 running 4.3.3? I know there is a commcenter patch for 4.3.3 I would love to have data with consumer cellular.

  51. After my own experience with consumer cellular, I would like to pass along some valuable info.
If you sign up with cc using a non cc phone, you will not get any data service PERIOD, even though you requested it and you are paying for it, UNTIL you call or email them to change the description of your phone. The reason for this is that without a cc phone, the phone description on your account is something generic like “loaner phone” which has to be changed to one of THEIR data phones in order to actually enable data. This is misleading since they ask for the IMEI of the non-cc phone you’re using when you sign up.

Secondly, customer service is not trained and can’t help you, though they try and will direct you to their settings page. You need to get to tech support and depending on their level of experience, they will know to change the phone description while others may insist it won’t work. So if you can’t get through to one tech guy, email or call another. Once they change your account (my account shows 2 A697’s even though I signed up with a Tmobile myTouch and an old Samsung T619), problem is solved. Providing of course, you configured your phone correctly.

  52. And — speaking of correct configuration, can someone help me with my T619? I have the EXACT cc settings in both the mytouch and t619 but only the mytouch is working. The t619 gives me a network request timeout error and the MMS says wrong configuration. I’ve been working on this all day and I’m tired….help?

There is a special code to access gprs settings and mms settings on this phone which I have but there are different settings such as version # as well as the fact it uses “tzones” which I think is a browser? Can anyone think that far back prior to iphones? 🙂 I haven’t caught up yet.

  53. Terri, the only advice I can offer is to be sure to only change one thing at a time until you find the correct configuration. I suppose it’s possible that some phones don’t require the “http://”?

  54. Does anyone know if this hack will work on an AT&T iPhone 4G? I just ordered one today and would like to get data through my CC plan instead of having to buy a voice and data plan through AT&T.

  55. A follow-up on Scott P’s question. Now that iPhones can be ordered that are already unlocked, are there instructions posted anywhere on how to change the settings to enable Consumer Cellular service?

  56. I haven’t tested it on the iPhone 4 but it should work. Scott, let us know if you have any luck setting it up.

Bill, there are no straight-forward instructions for setting up Consumer Cellular’s end because you have to call them. Be sure not to tell them you have an iPhone or they won’t set it up for you. See the previous comments for more on that.

  57. Good news! I now have data working on consumer cellular with my iphone 4 running on iOS4.3.3. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you to mark and all who posted here. My basic process was:
1 – jailbreak at jailbreakme.com following all instructions
2 – install commcenter patch 4all4 through cydia from d23’s Repo
3 – install ifile through cydia (for some reason all the plist editors for windows would not work for me like they did on my 3gs) and use it to add the 3 lines to the carrier settings mentioned earlier.
4 – then the “cellular data network” tab showed up and I changed the settings as per consumer cellular
5 – contacted consumer cellular and after much run around as described by others had them change my phone profile to one of their phones.

This took months of trial and error but couldn’t have done it without all your help. If anyone needs more detail for any of the steps I will be happy to give it.

  58. Claudia, thanks for the comment! Good to hear it’s working on both iPhone 4 and iOS 4.3.3!

  59. Claudia- I’ve been holding out getting an iPhone 4 until I could use it on Consumer Cellular. I’d buy one of the unlocked phones though, so how do you think the steps you listed would be different if the phone was factory unlocked? It would be of tremendous help to me and possibly others if Claudia and Mark could collaborate on writing an updated how-to that you might expect to work on the unlocked iPhone 4. It’s confusing to follow through all the trials on this thread and keep track of what worked and what didn’t. Maybe this could wait until OS 5 and then do an updated step-by-step. Also, Claudia, what plan do you have with CC? How’s that working?

  60. Bill, you shouldn’t need to “unlock” for CC. They ride on AT&T. 🙂 Also if you are factory unlocked, the only thing you should have to do is add the CC APN in the settings. No hacking necessary.

For the sake of a step-by-step post on this, will the next person who uses this thread please document your process and add it to the comments?

I’m not messing with it much any more (at least not until iOS 5) and I don’t have an iPhone 4 to try it on.

  61. Bill, my phone is not unlocked because as Mark mentioned CC is using AT&T so no need but if you ever plan to use another carrier it would be necessary. I am using the largest web plan that CC has now (100MB) which is enough for me since I use wifi whenever I can.

I did not know much when I started but read thru all this info and also went to websites like modmyi.com or xsellize.com or sinfuliphone.com. Their information was very helpful. I would start with jailbreaking the phone. I went to http://www.cultofmac.com/how-to-jailbreak-your-iphone-4-iphone-3gs-or-ipod-touch-the-right-way and did everything they suggested to be safe. Jailbreaking is amazingly easy now…like downloading an app. Then move on to the next step when you are comfortable. You can’t do much to the phone that can’t be fixed with a restore (which I did at one point). Just don’t download 4.3.4 as it closes the window they used for jailbreaking and doesn’t offer any benefits – not sure if they’ve worked around that yet.

    Hope this helps.

  62. Thanks, Mark and Claudia. I’m holding out until iOS 5 (and possibly iPhone 5 in Sept?) until I buy, but it’s encouraging to know that at least right now, it IS possible to use the iPhone 4 on Consumer Cellular. All that might come to a screeching halt with iOS 5 and/or iPhone 5.

  63. Hey mark I was wondering what firmware you are running on your 3g? I noticed that the cellular data network settings are not there on my iphone 3gs 4.2.1, any suggestions? what firmware should I downgrade to? I am using cc of course.

  64. I’m running on the 3Gs with firmware 4.3.1. It sounds like you need to install the commcenter patch and then update your carrier.plist file. Read the post and comments carefully and you should have what you need to get it done.

  65. Mark- Would you be interested in starting a new blog on getting Consumer Cellular to work with the iPhone 4S? I’ve decided to take the plunge and would prefer CC to AT&T’s outrageous monthly fees. Pleeeeeease?

  66. Sure, but I’m on a 3GS and I’m too conservative to upgrade for now. On top of that, I’m not so sure you can jailbreak the 4S yet which means you won’t be able install the commcenter patch, which means you won’t be able set the APN for CC. It might be possible through the web based APN changer but I didn’t have any luck on my 3GS without the commcenter patch. We don’t know if the commcenter patch will work on iOS 5. Keep in touch though. When the jailbreak comes available we will be able to do some testing and see what works.

  67. I’m sure that it will only be a matter of time before someone jailbreaks the 4S and before an iOS 5 patch is made available for commcenter. Too much demand for that not to happen.

I’m getting off topic on this page, I know, but do you have a preference on jail breakers? And is it true what Apple says that you can permanently damage your phone by jail breaking? IOW, once you jail break, there’s no reset possible?

  68. You’re probably right about the jailbreak but someone will have to find an exploit before it can be done. Jailbreaking and unlocking is getting more and more complicated with each iOS release. Apple tries to lock things down by requiring code signatures, SHSH verification blobs from their servers, etc. Until I see a jailbreak, I won’t actually expect it. I know how difficult it is to find software exploits. 🙂

I always use the pwnage tool for jailbreaking. The reason for this is that modem firmware (also called the baseband) updates often come with iOS updates. They are new instructions for how the modem should work. If you update the baseband to a version for which there is no unlock available, you might prevent any future unlocks as well. This was the case with the 3GS version 5.14 baseband. You had the option to upgrade to the iPad’s baseband but this was buggy and broke the GPS for some users. If your intent is to use Consumer Cellular, you may not care about that since they ride on AT&T’s network.

So to answer your question, the only thing you may lose, is the phone. Even if you lose that, you won’t lose it completely since CC is essentially AT&T. A CC sim card will activate without jailbreaking or unlocking your iPhone. I have never heard of anyone messing up their phone beyond repair with a regular jailbreak. Then again, I don’t know anyone who uses green poison or any of those other whacky jailbreaks. I always wait for the pwnage tool or use redsn0w because I’ve been using them for over 3 years with no issues. Pwnage tool can jailbreak and upgrade iOS without touching the baseband. That’s what we like. 🙂

  69. One last newbie question–If I buy an AT&T 4S, I see multiple sites offering to unlock your phone so you can use it on ANY network. With the connection between CC and AT&T, is unlocking really all I need to do to get on CC? Except I’d need a mini SIM card from CC and that may be the hang-up? Or am I making it too simple? Thanks again, Mark. You’re a wealth of information and you explain things simply.

  70. I once unlocked my iPhone 3G via the use of a flat mod chip (the x-sim) which layed on top of sim card. This method was reliable until a new version of iOS came out. This is a costly, hacky way of unlocking and I don’t recommend it unless you never intend to upgrade your iPhone’s software. As to any other means of unlocking, I wouldn’t trust them. The 4S isn’t even on the shelves yet! The likelihood of a legitimate jailbreak or unlock is very slim at this point. I’ve seen so many unlocking scams over the last few years. Don’t mess with them. Go the unnoficiat/offical iPhone dev team. You can read up on a little bit of the iPhone jailbreak and unlock history there. I also like to follow their blog for when new exploits are found and the new pwnage tools are released.

Again, you don’t need to unlock at all to use CC unless you require the data connection. All you will need to do is take your CC sim card and cut it down to fit in the micro sim slot. There are templates out there for doing this that you can buy or you can just trace a micro sim onto the top of your sim and cut it that way.

It was a long journey for me to figure out the data issues with CC so I’m glad to share what I can. CC is a great company and I’ve been very pleased with their pricing and service so I am happy to recommend them and hopefully help to build their customer base via the iPhone community. 🙂

  71. I tried and tried to figure out your way-above-my-head solution and fully appreciate you posting such a detailed synopsis… but I also wanted to chime in on what ended up working for me. I installed a program from the website unlockit.co.nz and it worked brilliantly, just in case there are people reading this post who like me, can’t decode the tech talk.

  72. That’s great to hear! I used that site a while back with no success but I’m glad it’s working for you. I asked them to add Consumer Cellular and it looks like they did. Which iPhone and which version of iOS are you using?

  73. Uggh, are there instructions for people that are not technically inclined. I cannot connect through filezilla or winscp. I type in the host box-root@myipaddress user-root, pass-alpine with no luck. It keeps saying it cannot connect. Please help. I was told I did not have to pay for a network connection because at&t is offering free internet. Does this make sense?

  74. Do you have SSH installed on your iPhone? You won’t be able to connect unless it is installed and enabled. With regard to the AT&T thing, they do have wireless hotspots all over the place. That’s probably what you were told about. They don’t use your cell-phone data connection. Instead, they use standard WiFi for which you don’t need to customize your iPhone, but you do need to be in range of one of their hotspots. Make sense?

  75. Just upgraded my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5. Using http://www.unlockit.co.nz/ I emailed the Consumer Cellular pofile to myself. Then I opened it and installed it, rebooted and data worked fine. Yay! It’s so much more simple now than it was a while ago. I didn’t even mess with the commcenter patch.

  76. By continuing to read more about getting my upcoming 4S to work with Consumer Cellular, I’ve run across the difference between tethered or untethered unlocks, which as I understand it has something to do with whether or not your phone will continue to work the same after a iOS update (right?). So, is your iOS update on your 3GS tethered or untethered, or am I asking the wrong question?

  77. You mean, teathered vs untethered jailbreaks. Teathered means that you will have to be plugged in to your computer to reboot your device. Trust me, that’s very bad. You want to wait for an unteathered jailbreak. You cannot unlock until you jailbreak and even then you’ll have to wait until an unlock is available.

My phone is the 3GS. 🙂

  78. Great news that the iPhone 4 can be used on CC. Mark, tell me more about how you upgraded to iOS 5 and what the process was. I’m using sn0wbreeze on my PC to do the jailbreaks. I may upgrade if I can keep my baseband where it has been and stay jailbroken. What significant benefits do you have with iOS 5 over the 4.3.3? I just figured I’d wait until I got a forward facing camera before I did any changes, but we’ll see. Maybe I’ll take the plunge if it’s worth it.

  79. Hi Mark-
    1) I called CC and they’re sending me a SIM card for my new (soon to be ordered) iPhone 4S. The customer service rep said if I cut the card to make it fit an iPhone that the SIM card would no longer work. I think that’s been proven not to be true with other carriers, so wouldn’t CC’s SIM cards be similar (sorry for the pun)?
    2) I know that a jailbreak for the 4S still hasn’t been announced on the Dev Team blog, but as soon as it’s available I suspect I’ll be diving right in. So, have the instructions at the beginning of this blog been updated to reflect the latest information as you know it or will I have to read through all these comments again and piecemeal it back together for a more current set of steps to try?

  80. No Mark, I don’t have ssh. I’ll look that up and get that installed. So just to clarify, I will need to pay for the data service through Consumer. I thought I would, but the rep said that in fact if I were an AT&T customer I would be getting it for free so because we are on their network it is free and a data plan would not be necessary. After I install ssh and pay for data plan do you think I might be able to use my phone as a hotspot?

  81. Hi Mark & All,
Thank you so much for all the help I got through reading what you and others have done. A friend gave me an iphone 3G, 4.2.1 and 5.15.04 modem firmware. I have been a happy customer of Consumer Cellular for some time and was so happy to get the iphone working with them. The only thing that I can’t figure out how to get working is message with a picture. I can send a text message, but get a red ! when trying to send a picture with it. Can not receive one with a picture either. I would appreciate any help anyone can give. I have a feeling it is some little setting. I went by the first plist fixes that you put out. I noticed in your updated one you had AllowMMSCEditing and AllowMMSEditing. Does that have anything to do with it?

  82. Yah, when you attach an image, it becomes an MMS message rather than an SMS message. I don’t think I ever was able to send them but I was definitely able to receive them. You definitely have to have data turned on to receive them.

  83. I have been reading through this blog for about an hour and am decidedly overwhelmed. However, getting towards the very end, it sounds like one person (Lauren on 10/12) used the unlockit site and nothing else needed to be done? Is that correct? I have a friend who just upgraded her AT&T iPhone and mailed me her existing one today which I should have later this week. I don’t know the details of the phone but assume it is 3G. I have Consumer Cellular and started to search to see if I could use it on my plan with them and that is how I found this site. After the first 20 minutes of reading I had decided to not even try because I simply don’t understand any of this but then kept reading.
So, here is my question. Is it now as simple as “jailbreaking” the phone (which I still don’t quite understand and will also need help with, that is how ignorant I am about this stuff), and then manually entering the settings listed on the unlockit website? I didn’t even understand how you could email the data to yourself on the iPhone or install the data on the iPhone if it is not already accepting data, so I assume I have to follow the manual setup instructions at this link: http://www.unlockit.co.nz/mobilesettings/settings.php?id=179 and that is all I need to do? Do I take the SIM card from my phone and put it in the iPhone first, or after? I’m afraid my questions are quite stupid to most on this site but that is how slow I feel as I try to discern what it will take me to try this. Are all of the details at the start of the thread now unnecessary or I am misunderstanding the progression of the trail over time?

  84. Mark thanks for the reply, but could you be a little more specific about about turning on data? Consumer Cellular data is on and working. On the phone setting network cellular data is on as well as messages MMS Messsaging. I thought there might be something in the .plist that needs to be modified.

  85. Matt – Yes, the Oct 24th post.
Chiquita – You might be able to get it working by messing with the .plist but now that I’m on iOS 5, it’s probably very different anyway. I probably won’t be messing with the .plist anymore since I don’t care too much about MMS but if anyone else digs into it, please post your results!

  86. Hi everyone! I’ve had a long hiatus(sp?) from Mark’s Blog but just thought I’d mention that I just got an iPhone 4 because it has the forward camera on it for Skyping… anyway. It’s on iOS 5.0.1 and I used Redsn0w to jailbreak it (point the software to 5.0) Everything works! I used the unlockit.nz site to email me the settings and installed it. Data works perfectly now! No need to update the carrier plist unless I want to mess with MMS, which never worked btw with my 3gs. :o( Not a big deal as I can email stuff if I really have to. Data works though! Right now as of Dec. 1st it’s a “semi tethered” JB which means I still have the main functions of the phone and safari *if* I have a need to reboot it away from a computer. It’s really not a big deal since there is hardly a need to reboot an iphone more than once every couple weeks. There was a Siri type tool on Cydia, but it went away. I’m sure it will be back soon when the legal ramifications are figured out. That’s a big + for me and I don’t have to buy an iPhone 4s and no one will know it’s just a 4! haha Apple! I love it when people can figure out a way to beat the system ;o) Thanks for posting everyone. Sure helps us decide how to do the iOS updates and getting data to work on the road. Best of luck to ya’ll!

  87. For those of you reading this blog and have no idea what Mark was talking about…like myself..save yourself some time. Go to unlockit.co.nz and the rest is simple. I spent literally the whole night pushing through the directions above and then googling everything I didn’t know…which was just about everything. I somehow figured it all out and made all the changes to my iphone 4. Unfortunately, still did not work. The next morning I took my wife’s unaltered 3G went to unlockit.co.nz and was done in 1 minute. After spending a couple of hours restoring my Iphone 4 settings, as unlockit.co.nz would not work with the modifications I made, I was able to finally go back to unlockit.co.nz and was done in a minute. Nothing else needed…no jailbreak, no unlock, no changes to plist.
I somewhat enjoyed the process Mark described as I never thought I would be able to do it. As well, I thank Mark for putting the blog up as I never would have initiated the process without the information. Also, I called Consumer Cellular and told them my wife and I bought Motorola Bravo phones, from a previous consumer cellular client–falsity, and please make changes to our account to allow access to the web. This seems easier than explaining we had iphones as the consumer cellular rep. told me multiple times non-consumer cellular phones will not be able to access the internet. Thanks again!

  88. Hi all. I am looking to add some information/a tip. I used the unlockit site to setup an iphone that is about 2 years old, used on the AT&T network. It worked fine for two days but then I (may have made the mistake of) called CC and asked about a gap in reception around my home. They resent a signal. Since then I have had significant trouble connecting internet and getting my MSN/hotmail account to connect/sync. I wondered if it was possible they are blocking my plan now that they know I have a non-CC phone. I called them yesterday and after the call the service worked again for a little while but is not connecting again today. Then I called back again today and talked with a different rep. who said that it is probably something with the settings on your phone, but definitely isn’t anything on our end. He made sure I could get the web before he hung up but my email still wasn’t working, nor could I get email from the web browser (Hotmail/MSN) and he said it may be a security setting or other type of setting that is blocking it. He said, “we don’t mind if people choose to use non-CC phones, including iPhones, but we can’t support you in settings or support on the phone itself; we can still track your data use and charge you appropriately, but we can’t sell those phones nor will we provide technical support to them.”(which makes sense, I have no problem with that, it is their legal agreement with AT&T that they have to uphold, and BTW, I too LOVE CC’s pricing and general service approach – and I really want to stay with them) I saw a cheap Motorola Bravo locally on Craig’s List this morning and asked if they had my phone type set to that would it make a difference and he said No, it would not, since my current CC phone also accepted data. He said the reason they like to know the type of phone you have is to be able to pull up the right support information/manuals and to make sure it is or isn’t a data supported phone based on which plan you have. So afterwards, it dawned on me that when they resent my signal that something in that changed the settings on my phone so I re-ran the auto set-up program from the web and that instantly corrected the problem. So – FYI for anyone reading this – it seems to me based on this experience that if you ever have CC resend an updated signal to your phone, it changes the phone’s settings, and you would need to redo them for whichever non-CC phone you happen to be using. If anyone has any others thoughts or input on this, or if I am missing something, post it.
Thanks again Mark for having this forum to help those of us that love CC but also would like more phone options available.

  89. Yes, I am getting both phone and data. However, before I replied to Bill I wanted to make sure my data was still working. It was not. Went back to unlockit.co.nz, via wireless connection on my iphone, and now it works again. I am somewhat confused how the apn settings got changed back? It works again, for now.

  90. Any idea as to why I can only access some sites. For instance, I can’t get on to Hotmail? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

  91. Hello all. To add to the discussion, I too used the steps Mark outlined in getting my 2g unlocked/jailbroken Iphone to get MMS and Data. Recently, I bought an iPhone4 that was already unlocked (ultrasnow) running 4.3.3 firmware still (the only one that you can still unlock). I trimmed my sim to fit the microsim, put in the Web and MMS settings and was in business messaging and Edge data.

Now, here is the interesting thing. I was missing some group texts and read that I needed to turn 3g on, then off (I have left is off, because Consumer Cellular is only Edge data, right?) Well, I apparently left 3g on last night and aside from getting all of my texts i missed (my phone blew up with texts…22 in about 10 seconds)…I HAVE 3g on now. Not Edge, but 3g. I really didn’t believe it, but I tried downloading some mail, and it was significantly faster. Still dubious, I went to YouTube and watched a video…WATCHED a video! You can’t even do that on Edge without waiting an eternity. Still, I was doubtful, never having 3g before. So I switched off the 3g, back to Edge with an “E” in the task bar. Tried to watch a youtube video…after one minute, it was still loading. Switched it back to 3g. Loaded the same video, and it worked in seconds.

Needless to say I’m very excited because now I have all of the perks of a locked phone without the contract! I couldn’t find any literature on the web indicating that Consumer Cellular has enabled 3g, but looking at their new phones, I assume they do since at least one is advertised as having 3g speeds.

The phone has several “jailbreak” apps on it, but none I can contribute to making 3g work. Hope others try and see if flipping 3g “on” works for them.

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

  92. Anyone figured out the MMS problem yet? I also am unable to send a photo with a text message. If anyone has figured it out, please post the solution.

  93. Here is the information I received, as best I understand it:
It is not possible to set MMS Settings in (without jail breaking etc. the iPhone) via any config file etc. If you cannot see the option to manually set MMS information (haven’t jailbreaked) you cannot set the MMS settings.
Maybe in the future release of software, Apple will allow you to set the options but at the moment it’s not possible with a config file like what you get from unlockit sites.
So, MMS (text with photo(s)) is the only thing that will not work if you use a config file from unlockit and most can live without that – if you need to send a photo, as mentioned above, do so through email instead of a text (or if you are talking to others also on an iPhone with iMessage service, that uses data or WiFi and allows text with photo to go through just fine).
Hope this helps those of you wondering about this.

  94. Steve or anyone else that might be able to help. I went to unlockits website and it’s saying I need to get on the website from my phone. How do I do that with no internet. I keep getting a message on my phone “could not activate cellular data network. You are not subscribed to a cellular data service”. The rep I talked to today said my dataplan includes messaging and internet and that if it was not working there is nothing they can do because it’s not a cc phone. Please help. Apparently I could have been using the internet the whole time I’ve had the service, and it’s been months now and I cant seem to figure this out. Thx

  95. Got it finally by using unlockit.co.nz. Thank you so much to Steve for the info. I am also able to use my phone as a hotspot when when my signal is weak on my laptop. Finally!!!!!

  96. It seems that CC has removed the support email link from their site, forcing people to use phone support. Phone support said they could not select the grayed out “Data (Web)” radio button on the “Change Services” page either, but claimed that following instructions on the site would make that option available. That, of course, is entirely untrue. A workaround is to ask the phone support person to change the phone associated with your account to one of THEIR phones that’s web capable. (Just give them a make/model #.) Once that’s done, the “Data (Web)” radio button becomes active.

  97. I was going to call CC to try to figure out the problem with getting data on my wife’s unlocked iPhone 3GS iOS5 when I stumbled onto your blog. Your instructions are far beyond my capabilities but I finally went to http://www.unlockit.co.nz to see about jail breaking as a start. To my surprise, they have a listing for CC and when I used it to make the changes in the phone, Edge data began working immediately with no further modifications. Thanks very much.

  98. Glad to hear of your success story. Yah, that will get the data working but for most people it will not get MMS (video and picture messaging) to work.

BTW – I am the guy who suggested they add Consumer Cellular on http://www.unlockit.co.nz and they did right away! Yay! What an awesome service they are doing for the iPhone community!

  99. Love this thread Mark and awesome help with my Iphone 3GS running 4.3.3. So I had a crusty Motorola flip phone through Consumer Cellular. Santa got me an unlocked Iphone 3GS for Xmas (luv that guy). Messaging and phone worked fine with the sim card from the Motorola but no web access due to the grayed out box under my account. I went to the unlockit website on my home wifi over the weekend and made the change to the APN for Consumer Cellular. Today, first time I called I got no help from the rep. Seemed clueless and didnt care to help. I called again and grabbed a great rep from CC. I stated I received a Motorola Bravo and need to have it updated on my account. “No problem” states the rep. “It will take a few minutes while I go into my system and make that change.” “Ok sir power the phone down and turn it back on”. Turned my Iphone 3GS back on and BAM! web access to be had and fairly quick. Now just need to watch the useage. Love this site and would have never been able to do it without it. You should take Paypal donations from all the peeps you helped out including myself. One question:

When 3G is turned on it shows that but when I turn off an E appears on top but seems I still get web access. Which should I use? Is there any benefit to either? Thanks again dude!

  100. The “E” stands for “Edge”, the older data network. It is much slower than 3G. For this reason I prefer to leave 3G on all the time. Rather than messing with the 3G setting, I use SBSettings to toggle “data” on and off. It disables both Edge and 3G in a single tap. You can do the same thing in the built-in settings app by toggling the switch for Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data. The SBSettings option is a nice shortcut for the 4 taps you have to do otherwise.

  101. i have an iphone 4 running iOS 5.0.1. it’s jailbroken, and i went to the unlockit.co.nz website and installed the CC profile. confirmed working with 3g enabled. Thanks!! i’m ecstatic!

too bad i just found out about this because i’ve been with CC for quite a while but have been relying on wifi even though i’ve been paying for Data along with my Messaging plan. i’ve searched for instructions before but for some reason your blog never popped up until now. maybe it’s Google’s fault. I found you from DuckDuckGo this time…

anyway since this unlockit.co.nz website seems to take care of everything, mark, perhaps you could make it the first mention instead of messing with plist files?
    thanks again

  102. Dear Steve. Mark, et al.

Did I understand correctly that Steve has CC data working on an locked, non-jailbroken iPhone 4?

Unlockit has not yet worked for me, even after doing a “Reset Network Settings” on the phone.

There are still 6 months or so of AppleCare on the device, so I’d prefer not to unlock or jailbreak it.

Is a more extensive reset needed? Thanks for any help and insights!

    Bill

  103. Hey Bill, Unlockit does not require a jailbreak and it does work on every version of iOS. If I were you, I’d try the following…

    1. Uninstall any existing carrier profiles (Settings > General > Profile)
    2. Do a full network reset (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings)
    3. Do a full power down of the phone and power back up
    4. Open safari and go to unlockit.co.nz
    5. Choose “Custom APN” and select “Consumer Cellular” as the carrier then click “Email Profile”
    6. Email the profile to your iPhone’s email address
    7. Open the settings.mobileconfig file attachment in your email and tap “Install”

If you are still having problems then there might be some other restrictions on your phone that we have not discussed here yet. Let us know how it goes!

  104. Greetings Mark – much obliged for your rapid reply!

Still no luck ;-( Funny thing is I can see from “iPhone Configuration Utility” that the APN Carrier Settings have been changed to att.mvno as they should be.

Phone portion has been functioning just fine since cropping SIM down last week; running iOS 5.0.1

I just activated the data service with CC earlier today, and already received confirmation of the service change. Not sure what else might be restricting access?

  105. Sounds like you’ve done all the right things. Do you have another phone that you can test the data on to make sure it’s activated with CC?

  106. Looks like it could be something along your line of thought: I logged in to my CC account and it’s telling me that I have at least one phone that needs to be activated.
Background: I ordered a spare SIM card before cropping down the active one. So I wonder if they have enabled data service on the new card? Their call center is closed for the night; and I’m afraid to use the online activation, for fear it will deactivate the cropped card. Wouldn’t be that big of a deal, except that I’ve just put the phone in a LifeProof* case, which isn’t designed to be opened repeatedly. Will chat with them tomorrow – stay tuned & thanks again!

*which is a noteworthy find in it’s own right, but perhaps a bit off thread here…

  107. I too, have been using CC for awhile now on my android phone (Galaxy Captivate) and just bought the iphone 4s running 5.0.1. Everything worked fine out of the box since I also learned the hard way how to get a non CC phone provisioned correctly. However I STILL can’t get mms working and was hoping you might have a solution. It’s jailbroken and I used the tetherme/APN editing app to access the Data Network tab and edit the MMS settings. I tried rebooting, turning on/off airplane mode, wifi, reset, reboot and a ton of other tweaks but can’t get it working. I’m wondering now if the plist still has to be edited even though I was able to change the web/mms settings from the Settings tab. Maybe I’m missing something else? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  108. TetherMe states on their Cydia page that they bypass signature checking and allow you to manually edit the APN settings. Seems like the best of both worlds if it works correctly. I have not had any luck with this app on my iPhone 3G or 3Gs. Let us know if you get it working! You might try to contact the creator of the app through Cydia as well. He can probably point you in the right direction.

  109. Duh…never mind. It’s now working perfectly and I am SOOO excited! Tether Me/APN editing (need to install both) installs a separate TetherMe profile where you can also access your Data Network settings. Obviously the settings have to match in both the Settings/General/ Network/ Cellular Data Nework, as well as Settings/Tetherme/Cellular Data Network. So for all those out there who want a nice new iphone 4s to work flawlessly with CC:
    1. Jailbreak using Absinthe
    2. One Cydia is installed, search for and purchase TetherMe for $4.99 which automatically installs TetherMe APN editing. This installs a separate TetherMe profile in addition to giving access to the Cellular Data Network tab.
    3. You then enter your CC web and mms settings. If they both match (duh), it works!! No plist editing and you don’t even need unlockit.co.nz.
After days of research and obsessive tweaking, I can’t believe how easy it turned out to be. And Mark is right, no need to unlock which is a good thing considering they only just released the hack for jailbreaking the 4s and are still working on an unlock. Sorry Tmobilers. You have to purchase at full price from Apple if you want it unlocked.
A word of caution – if you are going to update to 5.0.1, do it before you jailbreak. Then disable your itunes automatic launch and update feature because once you update your 4s, you’ll lose the jailbreak and unauthorized apps. That apparently comes from the hackster guru himself.

  110. I purchased an unlocked iPhone 4S from Apple and signed up for a Consumer Cellular account with Connect!(i.e. data). When I initially plugged in the sim, data seemed to be working fine. Later that evening, data was disabled and the CC configuration page at https://www.consumercellular.com/Account/ChangeServices showed Messaging checked and Data(Web) grayed out and uncheckable.
I called CC and talked to someone who seemed knowledgeable. She said that because I had an ‘unknown phone’ it would not work with their data provider who she said was ‘Clearsky’. I suggests just setting it to one of their phones with data enable, but she said it would not work because of the incorrect IMEI.

    Who is Clearsky?
    Anyone have suggestions?

  111. Anyone have a problem with CC data plan. I got an iphone working (prior owner was on AT&T), everything looked to be ok and I could not believe how realtivly easy it was to set up.This was Monday night, today Weds. I get a usage alert, my data plan usage went through the roof it more than tripled!!! in TWO days??? is there a solution to this? for now I upgraded, but at this pace I will max that out soon. HELP! …thank you!

  112. Nik, you’re going to have to do a little research to discover the source of your data usage. I’ve never heard of anything like this.

  113. thanks Mark. I called the folks that helped me set up the phone, for their opinion. The guy said it sounded normal to him based on apps and other stuff i have on iphone. I am at 248 MB, upgraded to 500MB, i will see how that works. Hopefully this is the phone for me and i don’t have to search for another (I hate deciding on cel phones!)

  114. I got my iPhone 3G working on Consumer Cellular. It’s great! My bill will go from $100/month to $35/month. Yeah! The only problem is I lost Visual Voicemail. Is there any hack to get that back?

  115. Congrats Steve! That’s what I’m talkin’ about! Saving money every single month! I don’t know of a way to get Visual Voicemail working but all of its features are available through google voice. You can download the GV app for free. I use google voice and give that number out to people so that if I ever change cell phone providers, I don’t have to try to communicate my new number to everyone. It also allows call screening, custom rings and custom messages based on the audience.

  116. Hi, I have a non CC, Samsung Solstice A887 phone, with Consumer Cellular services, the phone works and texting works, but I cannot access the web, I do have their data plan. Support was not very helpful, they wanted me to buy one of their phones. Could anyone give me instruction on how to configure my Samsung to get web access, I do have the page on CC web site and it is not very much help. Thanks.

  117. @Nik — same question here with data usage on Consumer Cellular. I have no idea where it’s coming from since I’m almost always home (I work from home) and my iPhone connects to my wifi for internet access. I’ve disabled 3G while I’m home hoping that makes a difference, but I’m still racking up MBs (not a lot, but some). I called CC and they were no help. I, too, upgraded my plan just to be safe after 2 usage alerts. Hoping to downgrade it again once I get this figured out.

If anyone understands how the “Wireless Web” charges accumulate with Consumer Cellular, please post! Thanks!

  118. I had an iPhone 3GSthat was sold to me as jailbroken and unlocked. It worked fine for voice, text and Internet. I set about trying to activate MMS and something went wrong. I can no longer send or receive text messages, though I can surf the net. Also, Filezilla on my PC does not recognize my iPhone, although iTunes works fine with it, so I can’t get into the bundle files to do any editing. Any suggestions?

  119. If you wish to use Filezilla you’ll have to install OpenSSH from Cydia. Go do a Google search. It will give you everything you need to know. You can find your iPhone’s IP address in the SBSettings pull down.

  120. Well, that’s easy for you to say.;-) Is there any place that lets one install the OpenSSH from Cydia without being diverted with long explanations of who developed it and how, then shunting me off to something called pUTTY and a myriad of other acronyms that I’m apparently expected to know? And what does all this have to do with FileZilla and my original intention, editing files on the iPhone? I guess it takes a book to educate an intermediate computer user on this big mysterious realm.

  121. I’ve never actually seen an iPhone get bricked. Read up on DFU and Restore modes.

  122. Thanks for the info. I’ve recently switched to CC and am enjoying paying less and doing more: after following your instructions on my 3GS, I’m able to use phone, text, and web! However, MMS is still not working. I installed a commcenter patch for iOS 4.1 and was able to use iFile and Cyberduck to edit the ATT carrier bundle and add “AllowEDGEEditing” as array with 1 item (bool) set to “true.” But still no luck–any suggestions?

  123. I got it working on my Jailbroken and Unlocked 3G with 4.2.1 and 06.15.00 Firmware. I used redsn0w to jailbreak and upgrade to the 05.16.00 (ipad) firmware since you cannot unlock it with ultrasn0w if you have the 05.14.04 firmware. It was pretty easy to jailbreak and update the firmware with redsn0w. Next I unlocked it with ulrasn0w. Very easy. Now to get the MMS working.. I pulled my Consumer Cellular sim card out and replaced it with an old T-Mobile sim card I had. Once I did this the Cellular Data Network option appeard. I left it on that screen and then pulled the T-Mobile sim card and replaced it with my Consumer Cellular sim card and filled in all the settings for the Consumer Cellular. I then exited the settings and went straight to Safari and surfed successfully. I then attempted to send a picture via MMS and it sent successfully.

The Problem… I usually toggle my Data off and on only when I am not on Wifi and need it. When I toggle it off it removes the APN Settings. Also when you power down the phone you loose the settings.

So as long as you leave the phone on and the Data toggled on you are all good.

    Thanks for the information

  124. UPDATE…
I just used WinSCP (http://winscp.net/eng/index.php) to connect to my phone (had to install OpenSSH via Cydia first) and used plist editor for windows (http://www.icopybot.com/) to edit the plist file. I am on Windows 7 64bit and both programs worked without any issue.
    I simply added
    [<key>AllowEDGEEditing</key>
    <true/>
in front of <key>CarrierName</key> and it enabled the Cellular Data Network option. I will edit the other stuff later since it’s 01:38am and I am tired…

REMINDER: be sure to save a copy of the original carrier.plist incase you mess something up. Better safe than sorry.

Since I am done I plan to uninstall Openssh..

Again, Thanks for this information. It is a blessing…

  125. Well, at first I was able to edit the data information but after a few minutes or a reboot I wasn’t able to get into the network section in the settings menu. I read up in this and found that t was be ause of security that Apple set up at a certain point in iOS. In order to get areound this I neede to install a ComCenterPatch that would bypass the security settings and allow me to create a custom plist. Done. You canget it by following the king below. It is uninstallable in Cydia. It installed for me without issue and now that I used one of you’d custom plists I am up and running with data and mms on my blocked 3G with 8th.
    http://www.hackint0sh.org/general-127/commcenter-patch-all-devices-ios-4-x-originally-wortel-191761.htm

By the way… Did you know that AT&T is now unlocking iPhones for customers as long as their contract is satisfied and you are the original owner? Just had one of my phones Factory blocked for free by AT&T. Thanks again.

  126. FYI – CC is now offering refurbished iPhone 3GS’s for sale and “sanctioned” use on their network – and it appears as part of this that they upgraded/updated their network –
I had been using a 3GS on their system for months and then recently started having problems with the data not working, having to reset the phone’s original network settings, deleting the unlockit APN and reinstalling, but then it would stop working again. This appears to correlate with their official offering of these phones on their network.
Fortunately when I saw that they are now offering the iPhones after doing a Google search to find this blog which originally helped me get it working in the first place, I called and they would now support me with the 3GS and they believe the problem is that the SIM card I am using is too dated for their current network and settings – so they are sending me a new one. Hopefully that will solve the problem, but I haven’t received it yet so we’ll see… will keep you posted on this in case others that have been using iPhones on the network start having problems like I did. Of course, I suppose, it could be my phone, which has been around the block and likely will meet the cellular graveyard at some point – but the good news, I can get another one from them for $200 and stay on the fantastic Consumer Cellular rates and service. Of course, I would absolutely love a 4S or even the upcoming 5, but I can’t afford that on my budget so this is the best option for me.

  127. @ME – Please do let us know if that works. I too have been having data connection issues. I will ask for a new sim if it fixes your problem. Thanks for posting.

  128. Mark,
I have an iPhone 3gs running ios 6.0.1 that has been unlocked by Apple. I am in the process of moving the phone to Consumer Cellular and have read all of the info in this blog as well as your subsequent blog. I’d like to have all of the functions of the phone operate as they did with AT & T, including MMS. I just want to make sure I’ve got it right:
    1. No MMS on a 3gs unless you jailbreak and manually change plist files?
    2. Will your method above and in the subsequent blog enable MMS on a 3GS with iOs 6.0.1?
    3. It appears Consumer Cellular now has their own means of activating data, it’s at http://www.consumercellular.com/iphoneapn. If I go that route, do I still need to use unlockit.co.nz?
    Thanks!

  129. Hey Bryan, thanks for the comments.

    1. Correct – No MMS on 3GS unless you manually update plist files OR install and configure TetherMe from Cydia. I have not personally tested either on iOS 6.
    2. See #1.
    3. This is the first I’ve seen of CC’s iPhone provisioning URL. This should essentially do the exact same thing as unlockit.co.nz and I would NOT expect it to enable MMS.

Let us know if you end up getting it working!
    Thanks!

  130. Hi, I have a 3gs iphone on os5.1. I am a consumer cellular customer. The phone is jailbroke. I have put in all the info for mms. I still can’t send pictures thru the message function. Is there any way to make this?

    Thanks so much
    Karen

  131. Hi, I was wondering if you’ve heard of this process working on an iPhone 4 with 5.1.1 OS?

  132. Greetings,

Today I enabled multimedia messaging service (MMS) on my iPhone 3G, iOS 4.2.1 with Consumer Cellular. I had already enabled data a while back following Mark’s instructions with unlockit.co.nz. Thanks to Mark, GamerDomey, Sebastien, wortel, Jonny, and Jeff for making this all possible!

    Steps I took

    1. Get Data Activated.
    Follow Mark’s instructions (steps 1 – 5) at: http://www.hickendesign.com/site/2012/02/how-to-setup-your-iphone-or-ipad-on-consumer-cellular/
Hint: If all you want is data and internet browsing you can skip to step seven. If you want to be able to send pictures in text messages proceed to step two.

    2. Jailbreak your iPhone 3G.
    Follow GamerDomey’s youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLed714iwM4
Hint: To prepare for the next step of unlocking your iPhone 3G, make sure to check the box “iPad Baseband” on Redsn0w UNLESS your iPhone’s baseband is 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, or 05.13.04.

    3. Unlock the iPhone 3G.
    Follow Sebastien’s instructions here: http://www.idownloadblog.com/2010/11/29/unlock-iphone-4-2-1-ultrasn0w/

    As per Jonny’s instructions…

    4. Install the CommCenter patch.
Follow wortel’s instructions in the pdf: http://xsellize.com/topic/95289-commcenter-patch-by-wortel-4all4-update/
Hint: Download and use “WinSCP” if using Windows.

    5. Find and edit the AT&T carrier.plist file.
    Follow Mark’s instructions here: http://www.hickendesign.com/site/2010/12/iphone-3gs-on-consumer-cellular-with-edge-data-working/
Hint: Download and use “plist Editor for Windows” and “WinSCP” if using Windows. Here is the relevant code that you are going to want to copy and past into your carrier.plist
    APNEditiabilityTypemask
    -1
    AllowEDGEEditing

    AllowMMSCEditing

    AllowMMSEditing

    6. Add the APN and MMS settings to your iPhone 3G.
    https://www.consumercellular.com/Support/Knowledgebase/2/42/141
Hint: I followed Jeff’s advice and entered “att.mvno” for both Cellular Data APN and the MMS APN.

    7. Contact Consumer Cellular
Use either email or telephone (I used telephone) and ask them to activate data for your cell phone.

Steps 2 – 6 took me about 6 hours today. Hopefully it won’t take you as long. Never give up. Never surrender.

  133. Mark, I finally got the iPhone4. I now have OS 6.1.3. I can get emails and surf the web thanks to following the info. here, but I can’t get MMS or group texts from other iPhone users, as you seemed to indicate. Can I follow the procedure listed above to get it working with MMS? I looked at your old post and it seemed to refer to this one.
